They were on utility poles and marked with warnings that claimed to be issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The messages appeared odd with poor grammar. They cautioned about immigration enforcement and requested proof of citizenship or legal status.
Later that day, I looked online, and reports validated what many had suspected: the flyers were fraudulent. They were not released by ICE, and there was no legitimate enforcement operation taking place in Makiki. Authorities clarified that genuine federal agencies do not distribute anonymous warning notices in communities, but in today’s world, nothing is surprising.
Residents who were interviewed expressed feeling startled initially, then frustrated once they discovered the truth. Many collaborated to take down the flyers and alert their neighbors.
