What Happened to Monday (2017)

My Rating: NC-17
Plot: One Child Policy
⚠️ Spoiler Warning!

What happened to Monday is a dystopian science fiction thriller film. Every threat against the existence of humankind can be traced back to the human population because the riches in this world is limited. And when there is overpopulation, it not only results in more crime but also hampers the world we live in. So every step towards stopping overpopulation should be applauded. But if we sacrifice our humanity in the process, the deed isn’t good anymore.

This film tells a story about seven sisters trapped in a single identity. When the world population reached an unnatural limit, a drastic measure called Child Allocation Act is introduced. Just like in China, this Act prevented parents from having more than one children. So when a woman died giving birth to seven daughters, her father vowed not to lose his granddaughters. So he named all seven of them by different days of the week. Grandfather allowed each of the seven girls to experience the real world, one person at a time.

For 30 years, the siblings didn’t have any problem with this harsh regime. But the secret was bound to get revealed eventually. And all of a sudden one day Monday got missing. So in search of founding the source and cause of the leak of their secret, the rest of the sisters starts their investigations.

Throughout their search, they unearth some dodgy business behind the Child Allocation Act. And finally, when the mystery behind the source leak gets revealed, there was a different reason behind it.

This movie has two strengths, but directing and editing was not part of those two. The advantage of the film lies in its plot and acting. Actress, Noomi Rapace was brilliant in portraying seven different characters flawlessly. I thought the plot was very intriguing. However, the execution didn’t do justice. I give this film a ⭐⭐⭐ rating.
